About EstimaHome

EstimaHome is an independent website that helps homeowners and contractors figure out how much material a project takes and roughly what it will cost. It is not owned by a retailer or manufacturer.

How the calculators work

Each calculator turns your measurements into quantities using standard geometry and the counting rules people in the trades use: board rows across a deck, posts per run of fence, cubic yards in a slab, strips per roll of wallpaper. Quantities are rounded up to the units stores sell. The formulas are printed on every page, with a worked example that uses the default inputs, and the same formulas are published at /api/calculators.json.

Product figures such as bag yield, coverage per gallon or bundles per square are inputs you can change. The defaults match what is printed on common U.S. products; your product's label wins.

The calculators run entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to us.

How prices are set

Default prices are ballpark U.S. home-center shelf prices, reviewed by the editor and last updated October 20, 2026. They are not quotes, and they are not pulled from a price feed or survey. Lumber, concrete and roofing prices in particular move with region and season, so enter what your store charges. The low–high range shows the subtotal ±15% by default.

Editorial standards

• Formulas are checked by hand and by automated tests before a calculator is published or changed.
• We do not claim data we do not have. Where a figure is a rule of thumb, the page says so and lets you change it.
• Structural and code questions (joist spans, footing depth, retaining walls over 4 ft) get a pointer to your local building department, not a guess.
• Store links and ads never change a calculation.
